Five Gongs for Britain at the New York Tony Awards

Statue of Liberty

With a handful of British imports securing America's most prestigious theatre award, critics are calling this a good year for our boys on Broadway

Of the 27 Tony Awards dished out at last weekend's ceremony, British artists managed to secure a smattering of nominations and five trophies. Boeing Boeing picked up Best Revival of a Play, with leading man Mark Rylance winning Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. Best Featured Actor in a Play went to The Seafarer's Jim Norton and two creatives' awards went to The 39 Steps for Best Lighting and Best Sound Design.

Coming in at just under 17% of the victories, this is hardly another British Invasion, but to step in and claim both Best Leading and Best Featured Actor is quite a scalp for Our Sceptred Isle.

The revival of South Pacific was the night's big success story, winning seven awards. Currently wowing audiences at the Lincoln Centre in New York, it may be worth looking out for a version that makes its way over the Atlantic. The company are keeping tight-lipped about a possible move to the West End but, with such an acclaimed run, it would be a shame to miss out if it were to spring up in London. Of course, we here at Show and Stay® will keep you up-to-date with all the latest news from theatreland so keep checking with us for the most recent bulletins.
